Google Business Profile: The Local SEO Fundamentals That Still Matter Most

·

By Bright Harbour Media

For many local businesses, the Google Business Profile drives more calls and visits than the website itself. It appears in the map pack, in Google Maps and in branded searches — often before anyone clicks through to your site. Getting the fundamentals right is one of the highest-return activities in local SEO.

Choose categories carefully

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you control. Choose the one that best describes your core service, then add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply. Review competitors that rank well to understand which categories Google associates with your searches.

Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match across your profile, your website and major directories. Inconsistencies create doubt about which details are correct. Use your real business name — adding keywords to it can put your profile at risk.

Complete every relevant section

  • Services and products with clear, helpful descriptions
  • Opening hours, including holiday hours
  • Attributes that matter to customers, such as accessibility or appointment options
  • Real photos of your premises, team and work, added regularly
  • A website link pointing to the most relevant page — often a location page

Earn and respond to reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and decisions. Make asking for reviews part of your normal process, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to every review — positive or negative — professionally and promptly. Never offer incentives for reviews or post reviews on behalf of customers.

Support your profile with your website

Your profile and website work together. A strong location or service-area page, consistent contact details, local schema markup and genuinely useful local content all reinforce what your profile tells Google.
